"Electric Counterpoint" is a work written by Steve Reich, an American avant-garde composer, premiered by Pat Metheny in 1987. The idea, for its live execution as recorded in this EP, is for the same guitarist to record in 12 sessions the 10 electric guitars and 2 electric basses as they are in the score, and then use that recording as a track to play another guitar on top. It's not a contrapuntal piece in the Baroque style with 12 voices! Each guitar plays almost the same notes as the others, generating an almost hypnotic acoustic effect in the superposition. So many guitars together create a strange timbre, like that of a new and indefinable electric instrument. Every note, every effect, even the fade-ins and fade-outs were written by the composer. The music can be listened to with great interest; it's very melodic and easy to listen to, with a certain mantra-like quality, not at all hermetic, and it resembles in its resources much electronic music related to the minimalist or ambient school.
