New creators in popular music keep emerging, and debut albums from artists who have a lot to say continue to be recorded. It’s a relief to corroborate this every so often when one of those surprising works arrives. Lucía (vocals) and Juan Cristóbal (piano and vocals) composed much of the material for "Lo que se nos canta," and possibly the most accomplished songs on this album. Tracks like "De más" and "Espiral" are perfect in their clarity and completeness. They seem to be made directly for two voices, written by the duo for the duo. They also cover Juan Quintero (with a beautiful rendition of "Equipaje") and Lucio Mantel! Yes, the selection that members receive this month already has a tribute in "Luminosa sombra." Coincidentally (or perhaps not), the guest musicians throughout the album were Roy Valenzuela (double bass) and Gaspar Tytelman (percussion), the same personnel as in "Nictógrafo." In a Carioca interpolation, there are tributes to Jobim and Vinicius. And at the end, a surprise. This duo, which has its brilliant moments, really does what they want, as they affirm, mixing chacarera with bossa nova, and pop song with vidala, finding a sound that could be called urban folklore. Special mention for the piano, very well recorded. Applause is due for the effort it takes for independent musicians to find a studio with a good real piano, when many established musicians have no qualms about using electronic keyboards for their recordings (not just for live performances). And another applause for the original graphics.
